Painted Portraits

"This series of portraits are of people who interest me for different reasons. My subjects are as varied as in any society. From my friend Elizabeth Catlett, to a cancer survivor, an art collector and a domestic portrait of a friend having an early morning tea. My previous projet of large scale portait drawings was of famous American artists. My current project can be seen as a dichotomy between it and my former work.

My small portraits are intimate, intesne and emotionally charged. Portraits have been in my life since my childhood in Holland, since the golden age of Dutch portraiture, have been part of my life. I have been fascinated by the discipline and it has been an important part of my work ever since," - Alphonse van Woerkom
